Shawn Johnson recently announced her 'retirement' from professional gymnastics, citing recurring problems with her left knee as the cause. Despite pressure from the whole world, Johnson says she made the right decision for herself, and despite four Olympic medals, she will be moving on to different things.
In a new interview, Johnson says, "I'm moving on to new things, but I do miss it." She also talks about going against the public's opinion and pressure to continue, explaining, "I had every reason personally to not continue because of the injury, setbacks and everything. But I had the world telling me to keep going. I'm a people-pleaser and it was hard to make that decision, but in the end I made the right one."
Johnson also appeared on Dancing With the Stars in 2009, winning the celebrity dance competition. She opens up on the experience, saying, "I rethought the decision later, but I loved it. I jumped on that opportunity. It was a super-fun experience. I was completely out of my element, but loved every minute of it."
In the end, Johnson seems excited about her future and exploring new options outside of gymnastics. She says she's still not sure what she'll do, but she adds that working with kids is her 'passion' so that's likely where we'll see her, in one capacity or another.
