Simona Halep is a Romanian tennis sensation whose willingness to undergo surgery to ease the pain on her back and joints has resulted in her making a major upward move in the Women’s Tennis Association rankings. In 2013 she moved from a top 50 ranking to the number 11 ranking in the world. Since this young Romanian had breast reduction surgery to ease the pressure on her back she has been surging up the world tennis rankings. Her ranking over the past three years has improved from 53 to 11.
Prior to 2013 she had never won a title. In 2013 Simona won a total of six singles titles in Women’s Tennis Association tournaments and was named the WTA’s most improved player of the year. Simona credits her decision to have breast reduction surgery as the reason for her improved play but it was not a decision without controversy. Most women want bigger breasts but she wanted the breast reduction surgery to improve her ability to perform her job and when it became public that she was going to have the surgery she had to deal with criticism by observers who felt she should not do it.
The next step in Simona’s career will be to advance to the finals of a Grand Slam. This is the question that holds the attention of many tennis observers: Can Simona Halep improve the consistency of her play so that she can advance to the final of a Grand Slam tournament?
Simona Halep's six wins in 2013 proves that she has the talent to achieve great things on the Women’s Tennis Tour. If she continues to improve in the same manner that she did in 2013 season she will likely end up competing in the finals of 2014 Grand Slam. Simona Halep is an example of a woman who did not allow herself to be influenced by the public about what she should do for her body and as a result her tennis career has been the beneficiary of the decision that she made for herself.
