Maria Sharapova booked her place in the quarterfinals after defeating the 17th seed American Sloane Stephens 6-4, 6-3. The number two seed in Paris didn't leave much chance to the 20-year-old American as she handled her serve through the whole match and managed to break her opponent four times out of the 12 chances he had. The Russian has won each set at the tournament so far this year.
"I still like to consider myself young," Sharapova said after she was asked how she feels when she plays the younger generation of players. "Maybe not the `young generation,' but somewhere in the middle."
With the loss Stephens is now 1-8 when playing matches against the top five players from the WTA rankings. Earlier in the year she recorded a upset victory over Serena Williams at the Australian Open where she managed to reach the semifinals.
Sharapova is a defending champion at the French Open and will be facing Serbian Jelena Jankovic who defeated the number 54 currently on the WTA rankings Jamie Hampton in straight sets 6-0 6-2.
Jankovic and Sharapova played a total of 9 matches so far. Sharapova has won 7 of those and most recently she won in Miami on Hard Court. The pair has never met on clay court before.
