The past few years have not exactly been the happiest for the Dutch model Sylvie van der Vaart, who has actually gone back to using her maiden name Meis since splitting from her husband Rafael van der Vaart. As well as finalising her divorce from Rafael back in December 2013, Sylvie has also had a serious illness that she has had to overcome in recent years.
Back in 2009 Sylvie van der Vaart confirmed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, revealing that she had undergone surgery in May 2009. These were very dark days for Sylvie and her family and now, five years since receiving that terrible news, she has opened up about her battle with cancer, admitting that each year that passes marks a special moment in her life.
She explained, "This year is a very special year for me because I am now healed five years and may now officially call me healthy. For me, this is something very special." Sylvie then went on to reveal the moment she was given the news, adding, "I then showered, sat down on the sofa, I watched TV and then I felt something. And the moment where I've felt it, I knew there's something not right."
Following the joy of getting through her battle with cancer, Sylvie van der Vaart then had to cope with the negative press surrounding her failed marriage to Rafael van der Vaart, with whom she has eight year old son Damian. However, whenever Sylvie feels things getting on top of her, she just remembers the darkness of five years ago and is grateful for everything she has in her life now.
