With strong reviews, a compelling premise and marketing campaign, and Oprah's support, 'The Butler' has easily won the weekend box office with $24.3 million for its three-day total.
It ended up beating the other new release, Kick-Ass 2, as well as the returning films, 'Elysium' and 'We're The Millers'. Kick-Ass 2 has earned abysmal reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which may have harmed its box office potential a little, and it's also turned off a lot of people with the extreme violence. The film still managed to come in third place with $14 million for the weekend, although holdover 'We're The Millers' ended up beating it.
'We're The Millers' has been over-performing and earned $17.7 million for the weekend, and Elysium came in fourth place with $13.5 million for the weekend. Elysium has been underperforming where We're The Millers has been over-performing, and it's the latest big budget sci-fi original this summer to fail expectations at the box office.
The other films in the top ten include Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters, Jobs, 2 Guns, The Smurfs 2, The Wolverine, and Paranoia. Paranoia is also a new entry, but it failed to even crack the top five.
