One of the most incredible compliments was recently afforded to Formula 1 racer Sebastian Vettel. It was noted by one of his competitors and also some racing aficionados that his consistent path to the winners podium has become so constant that its almost now boring and is reminiscent of the Michael Schumacher era. However, while the praise toward Mr. Vettel is deserved the two racers can only be compared in the amount of races they have won but not in the manner.
Michael Schumacher was the master

During the time in which Michael Schumacher was at his best his margin of victory averaged between an incredible 20 to 60 seconds. Sebastian Vettel’s margin of victory is only 2 to 5 seconds.

When Michael Schumacher raced the top Formula 1 companies had similar financial budgets and in many cases the rival car companies would outspend the team that Michael was representing and he would still win. Sebastian Vettel is a very talented Formula 1 driver but the spending budget of his team in some cases far exceeds his competition which can be translated into a competitive advantage in equipment. As of 2015 there will be a cap on the amount that can be spent by each team which will make the racing more competitive.

Michael Schumacher won five consecutive Formula 1 championships in an era when there was less of a gap between the financial budgets of the competing teams. Sebastian Vettel is a talented racer who has won four consecutive Formula 1 championships while driving for Red Bull but his margin of victory and the superior spending ability of his team were much different and makes the comparison between him and Michael Schumacher one that should only be based on the number of consecutive championships. Michael Schumacher’s consistent margin of victory during his era of racing is what distinguishes his reign as world Formula 1 champion from that of Sebastian Vettel.
