Although the decision to split up The Hobbit into three films was initially questionable, the high quality of the movies has convinced fans and skeptics alike that it may have been the right decision. In addition to being a cash cow for the studio, the films have managed to take an incredibly dense world and introduce new characters, flesh out their stories and back stories, and create a very compelling series.
While 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' debuted to a very strong box office [both domestic and international], it didn't do as well with the critics. The common complaint was that the film dragged too much, and that the story and plot felt too thin. Well, with the release of the first teaser trailer for 'The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug', those concerns look like they'll be answered.
We see the return of Orlando Bloom, and the quick introduction of Evangeline Lilly's elf warrior. Ian McKellen's Gandalf is missing for a large part of the trailer, largely because it seems to focus more on introducing the new characters and the plot. Of course, th best part of the trailer is undoubtedly the dragon at the end, otherwise known as Smaug [voiced in the movie by none other than Benedict Cumberbatch].
The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug comes out on December 13th, 2013 and stars Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen, Luke Evans, Cate Blanchett, Evangeline Lilly, Hugo Weaving, Lee Pace, Andy Serkis, and Orlando Bloom.
