A couple of months ago, the advance buzz on the Lone Ranger wasn't too strong. There were reports that the film had overshot its budget by a huge margin, that certain scenes didn't come together the way they had hoped, and that everyone was worried that the film wouldn't perform to the hype. However, the film just previewed 20 minutes of footage for critics, and so far the early reactions seem to be mostly positive.
The summer of 2013 is packed with original movies, which is always a good thing. However, no one really knew if the Lone Ranger would work in this environment, but it seems as though Disney, Gore Verbinski, and Johnny Depp may have managed to pull it off once again. Keep in mind, early reports for Pirates of the Caribbean were saying the same thing, but those films went on to spawn a billion dollar franchise.
After seeing the preview, a report from Indie Wire actually stated, "This looks like Verbinski at the top of his game – full of quirky tics and grand visual embroidery. And for those worried about the trailer's uneasy mix of humor and action, fear not - the two work beautifully here. The audience was really loving it, too, and from what we understand from people who have seen it, it's just as much breathless fun as Verbinski and Bruckheimer's original 'Pirates of the Caribbean' was."
All good news for people hoping that The Lone Ranger would succeed, and we might even have another Pirates of the Caribbean-sized hit on our hands. The Lone Ranger releases on July 3rd, stars Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp, and is directed by Gore Verbinski.
