Elena Vesnina has the opportunity to become the number one ranked women's doubles tennis player in the world if she and her tennis partner, Ekaterina Makarova can win the finals of the 2014 Australian Open this Saturday January 24, 2014. This will be a very impressive accomplishment for this Russian tennis star whose 2014 season got off to a rocky start when she suffered a hip injury while defending her singles title at the Hobart International tournament and then getting knocked out in the first round by Alison Riske, a player who is not even ranked.

However, Elena Vesnina demonstrated that this is the new Elena Vesnina, a tennis star who is much tougher mentally and able to forget about a loss and overcome an injury. In 2013 Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova paired up to win the 2013 French Open, their first Grand Slam tournament win together. For Elena Vesnina this was a huge breakthrough as she had lost three previous times in the final
Now, in 2014 after several years of developing her tennis game she is proving that she can be a dominant player on any surface whether it be clay, grass or hard court and that she is going to be a force to be reckoned with both as a singles player and as a doubles player. Elena Vesnina's improved singles play has provided her with more confidence and she is now able to lead a team to victory which was not the case in the past.

The mental and physical toughness that Elena Vesnina has displayed at the 2014 Australian Open in the doubles tournament has been impressive because she is still suffering from her hip injury but she is refusing to even acknowledge its existence and this is sending a message to her competitors that they are playing against a much improved Elena Vesnina
It looks like there may be a changing of the guard at the top of the doubles rankings in 2014 and do not be surprised if the name at the top of the rankings is Elena Vesnina.
