Twilight’s rein is finally coming to end, for better or for worse. The MTV Movie Awards nominations took place this morning, with Rebel Wilson and MTV’s Josh Horowitz announcing the nominees. The competition for the top honor, which is aptly named the Golden Popcorn Award [for Best Picture], will be among The Avengers, Django Unchained, The Dark Knight Rises, Ted, and Silver Linings Playbook. There was no mention of Twilight, which has dominated this category since 2008 when the first Twilight film came out.

Taylor Lautner gets nominated for Best Shirtless Performance
Other categories where Twilight usually wins, but didn’t even see a presence this year, includes Best Actor [Ben Affleck, Bradley Cooper, Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, and Daniel Day-Lewis] and Best Actress [Emma Watson, Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, Mila Kunis, Rebel Wilson]. Most surprisingly, Twilight hasn’t even been nominated for Best Kiss, which is almost always a lock in this category. Fans would anticipate their Edward and Bella going on screen and re-enacting the most iconic kisses from the film, but alas, this year won’t even see them with a possibility of taking the stage. The only category Twilight was nominated in was Best Shirtless Performance for Taylor Lautner in Breaking Dawn: Part 2.
In fact, this year’s nominees seem to be more of an Oscar-level caliber than previous MTV Movie Award nominees. It seems to signal that either films are starting to appeal to a wider demographic, or that the panel behind the nominees have decided that they feel this crop of films will bring in the most viewers. Of course, fan favorite Jennifer Lawrence still figures heavily into the nominee list, but as part of Silver Linings Playbook [due to Hunger Games already being nominated last year, and Catching Fire not yet released].
