Tom Hanks has had many a link to space over the years, appearing in the movie Apollo 13, writing, producing and hosting From the Earth to the Moon and now optioning the 1960s children’s toy Major Matt Mason, with the view to make a film about the space explorer.
Hanks said, “You cannot look up at the night sky on the Planet Earth and not wonder what it’s like to be up there amongst the stars. And I always look up at the moon and see it as the single most romantic place within the cosmos.” Tom then added, “If they could offer up a way to go to the moon that wouldn’t kill you, I’d sign up. First in line. Just to see what it looks like.”
Hanks also spoke of the Major Matt Mason toy saying, “Oh, I bought three of them and wore them all out. I played with him so much that the little wire inside his arms would snap and he couldn’t bend them anymore.” Tom Hanks can next be seen in Larry Crowne, due to be released on July 1.
