Ever since the High School Musical days, Vanessa Hudgens has been doing her best to break away from her Disney image and establish a strong acting career independent of the HSM films.
The first real post-High School Musical movie that Vanessa was actually involved in was 'Bandslam', which got good reviews but wasn't widely seen. Then, she starred in both 'Beastly' and 'Sucker Punch' in 2011, the latter of which was a wild departure from her High School Musical role. However, neither of those films did well and both were critically reviled.
She made a strong comeback in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which did very well internationally [largely due to the Rock]. Of course, her biggest departure to date has been her role in 'Spring Breakers', which has been as different as they come to her cleancut 'Disney' image. The film was a box office success, and showed that Hudgens has started to develop a knack for choosing interesting and varied roles.
Her most recent role that's drawn attention is that of Cereza in 'Machete Kills'. She appears very briefly in the international trailer for the film, but it's definitely a memorable few seconds as she looks drastically different to how we've seen her before. 'Machete Kills' comes out on September 13th, 2013, and in addition to starring Vanessa Hudgens, also stars Danny Trejo, Sofia Vergara, and Michelle Rodriguez, among many others. The Robert Rodriguez-directed film has been building buzz for several months, especially with several high-profile cameos, and is sure to become one of the more interesting films of 2013.
