Will another slow start for the Washington Wizards mean Coach Randy Wittman will be fired? Time will tell. Despite a slow start, two blown fourth quarter leads that led to losses and a losing record, there are reasons for fans to be optimistic, however.

It is true, last season the team was only 29-53, despite high hopes that new players could turn the team around. That was not much of an improvement from the 20-46 record the previous strike-shortened season. Despite a 2-7 start this year, many fans still believe the team can make the playoffs this year. After all, 90 percent of the season is still left.

Guard Bradley Beal is one reason for optimism. In his rookie year last season he averaged 13.9 points per game and 3.8 rebounds, almost as good as his college average at Florida State of 14.8 points and 6.7 rebounds. Guard John Wall is another reason some feel optimistic. In his three seasons with the Wizards he has averaged 16.9 points, and he improved last season to 18.5 points, to go along with 4.4 rebounds.

Nene is another reason some are hopeful for the season. In his first four games he averaged 14 points and 5.8 rebounds. Things should get better because as players heal, because Nene and Travis Booker have missed two games with a calf injury. Trading for center Marcin Gortat might make a big difference. The Polish-born center has had three double doubles already.

Will the team make the playoffs, possibly saving Coach Wittman's job? Time will tell, but the team does have some players who can score. If they can pass the ball off to each other well enough and play defense, who knows?
