As the January 2014 transfer window fast approaches footballer insiders are wondering if Mats Hummels, the talented centre back for Borussia Dortmund will be moving to a new team during this period or at the end of the season? The six foot four inch German National Team centre back is considered one of the top players in Europe at his position and his style of play reminds many of the legendary sweeper, Franz Beckenbauer.
Currently, one cannot imagine him leaving the team in January because his backup is out for the season with a knee injury. However, with the contracts of him and two of his other star teammates, Ilkay Gundogan and Marco Reus needing to be re-negotiated there will likely be a question of how much the team can afford and they cannot afford to lose a player of his quality for no transfer fee.
Mats Hummels injured his ankle in early November while representing Germany in an international match against England. The injury is not serious but when one considers the wear and tear on his body that will take place over the next several months as the team competes for the German club championship the team must make a decision on whether they intend to keep him for the long term or not.
If Borussia Dortmund is not prepared to pay him the equivalent or more than Barcelona’s Gerard Pique than the team should make the transfer with one of the several top European footballer teams that are constantly inquiring about his services. Footballers of his ability are rare and the prospect of losing him for little or nothing should not be an option.
Mats Hummels is a great footballer who can bring an added infusion of cash to Borussia Dortmund or he can help the team remain a contender for the German club championship for years to come. Borussia Dortmund must make a decision in January 2014 about what is more important to the team at the moment, immediate cash or prolonged stability on defense and the ability to contend for club championships both now and in the future.
Mats Hummels presents a major question for this team because the wrong decision could haunt the future of this club for next several years. Superb center backs are rare players so don’t be surprised if Mats Hummels commands a king ransom and still never leaves Borussia Dortmund.
