Ann Curry is a respected journalist and television personality who works for NBC News but she is known to the American viewing audience because she may have represented too much of a threat to the popularity of co-host Matt Lauer on the morning show NBC Today and for that she was basically fired from the show. No one knows if that is the true story but that is how many in the Asian community feel about concerning Ann Curry's removal from the NBC Today show. Ann Curry is an American-Japanese reporter and with her move from the news desk to the co-host position it is very likely that she was going to do something that Matt Lauer could not do and that is attract new viewers to the show.
Matt Lauer is a respected morning television show host but his viewers are likely the same viewers he has had for several years and he is not a Bryant Gumbel in his ability to attract the top guests to the show nor with his ability to ask the questions or provide the insights that keep a viewer on the edge of their seats wanting to hear what a guest will say. As a result the ratings of the NBC Today Show were basically stagnant with him and past host Meredith Viera.
However, Ann Curry represented a different dilemma for Matt Lauer because while there would be a slight ratings dip initially as the viewers became accustomed to her being the co-host of the morning show and thus talking with guests she also would be able to attract viewers from the large Asian population in the United States which is still a market that has huge growth potential for the television networks.
Ann Curry entered the Lions Den of morning television with the belief that she would be welcomed because she viewed herself as an asset but she did not consider the fact that her talent and ability to connect with the viewers also made her a potential threat as someone who could become very popular as an NBC morning host. Her presence caused Matt Lauer and his superiors to be threatened and in the process they undermined her as a co-host because they realized that she could potentially be a very good co-host.
Since Ann Curry's departure from the Today Show she has worked as an anchor and correspondent on national and international news for NBC but It has been rumoured by several news outlets that Ann Curry's NBC contract will not be renewed upon its completion which will likely occur sometime in 2014. The question for many entertainment insiders is will the Asian community revolt against NBC by "changing the channel" in response to the networks treatment of Ann Curry?
