While it was quite surprising to hear that Chelsea had decided to sack manager Roberto Di Matteo, considering in his short time he had won the Champions League and the FA Cup, it was not really anything new. The club are renowned for changing managers.
Since Roman Abramovich brought the club, there have been an incredible nine managers in nine years. While Jose Mourinho enjoyed a fairly decent spell as Chelsea boss, all of the rest have last around the year mark, with four not even lasting a full year.
Now, Chelsea have announced that former Liverpool and Inter Milan manager Rafa Benitez will take over as manager until the end of the season. Many have claimed that this is because former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola will become the new manager in the summer.
However, if Rafa Benitez does a good job, he could well last as Chelsea manager and become the first man to last longer than Jose Mourinho. Many have questioned the credentials of Benitez but all you have to do is look at the success of Liverpool under him, compared to what they have done since.
Rafa Benitez could well be one of the best decisions that Roman Abramovich has ever made.
