Let's get this straight from the start. Nobody wants to see anybody using any performance enhancing drugs in any sport, as it is clearly a way of cheating and what Russia have been found guilty of doing is shocking and needed to be punished. It is only really fair then, that the country itself is banned from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, showing that the sport will not stand for such behaviour.
However, it is also fair to say that this punishment is a little bit harsh on those Russian athletes who are completely clean and have never taken any banned substances ever in their career. So a compromise has been made, which will allow the clean Russian athletes to still compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, only they will not be allowed to represent Russian and will instead compete as a neutral.
While we have already seen a couple of clean Russian athletes taking this opportunity, including long jump beauty Darya Klishina and 800m star Yuliya Stepanova, there is one person who still feels that the outcome is not fair on the clean athletes. Pole volt star Yelena Isinbayeva, who won gold in 2004 and 2008, and bronze in 2012, has stated that the decision is the death of the sport.
Yelena stated, "Thank you all for this funeral for athletics." Which some people have agreed, although most people do feel that the action that has been taken against Russia is just and fair.
It will be interesting to see whether Yelena Isinbayeva will come to her senses and still take the opportunity to compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, or whether she will make a stand and decide to boycott the games. We will just have to wait and see.
