Following the recent announcement that young Disney actress and singer Zendaya is going to take on the role of Aaliyah in a new movie about her life, there has been a lot of discussion about whether the talented 17-year-old is the right person for the role. A lot of fans of the late Aaliyah have been very critical of the decision to cast Zendaya in the role, with many people being very cruel about the young star.
Fortunately though, Zendaya is not one to let the harsh critics get in her way and the actress and singer has admitted that she is a big fan of Aaliyah and is very passionate about the project. Zendaya has admitted that she knows that her performance will not please everybody but she just hopes that she can do justice to the legacy that Aaliyah left behind.
Zendaya explained, "I really want it to be perfect for her and show young people what she was able to do and what she accomplished. If you want something done right, you've got to do it yourself. I can't please everybody."
Meanwhile, Zendaya went on to claim that she feels like she can relate to Aaliyah, since they have both had fairly similar experiences in their lives. Aaliyah made a name for herself while she was still a relatively young woman, while Zendaya is doing the same thing with her career at the moment.
Zendaya added, "What I can do is work really hard and you know, just continue to show her legacy. I feel like she grew up so young and she grew up in the industry, and she just had to deal with so much. I connect with that."
Aaliyah's family have distanced themselves from the project, stating that they do not want to have anything to do with it, although they have also urged Aaliyah fans not to be critical of Zendaya.
