Alek Wek is a popular model personality that lives and works in the United Kingdom. Unlike most models, Wek was born in a country that has been impacted by war and chaos. Wek is originally from the Sudan and during the mid 80s she had to flee her country when a civil war had broken out near her home of Wau.
Wek and her family had to flee from the rebel army that was plaguing the land and from the government forces that were dominating it as well. The Wek family had to make a long trek while trying to leave their country. It was during this journey that her father succumbed to an infection that eventually claimed his life later in Egypt.
Eventually, Wek and the rest of her family relocated to London. Around 1995 when she was about 18 years old, Wek was discovered in an outdoor market in London. Since that time she has appeared in a variety of projects including those for Chanel, Kelvin Kline and Victoria Secrets. She has also played a role in the 2002 film the Four Feathers which starred former Hollywood actor Heath Ledger.
Currently Wek is a member of the U.S. Committee for Refugees Advisory Council, a missionary for World Vision and she works with the U.N. Refugee Agency to help rebuild her country and other areas of Africa that has been torn apart by war. Wek is not only a top model on the runways she is also a model for hope and change to her people and the world.
