This is the first time that Ben Affleck has seriously been in the Oscar race since ‘Good Will Hunting’. After all, his career did take a serious down-turn with ‘Gigli’, no matter how much he tries to blame it on the media or public perception of his relationship with Jennifer Lopez. However, he has made an incredibly strong comeback – three back-to-back critical and commercial successes [well, Gone Baby Gone was almost a commercial success], and all directed by him.

Now, Star Magazine [print edition] is reporting that with the critical success and Oscar buzz that ‘Argo’ is receiving, Ben is becoming ‘obsessed’ with finally winning another Oscar, this time for directing. Star’s source adds that while Ben is enjoying the attention, “Ben really wants to win an Oscar for this film, and he’s become pretty obsessive about it.
Another insider added that with Ben travelling constantly to promote the film, “he and Jen are spending a lot of nights apart. They’re at a breaking point right now.”

In all reality, it’s unlikely that his promotional duties are affecting his marriage, especially considering that his wife is in Hollywood and would understand the hard work behind an Oscar campaign. It’s also very likely that Ben will be nominated for the Oscars, both in the Best Director and Best Picture category [he is a producer on Argo, which is almost guaranteed to get a Best Picture nomination].
