With Warner Bros. and DC doing all that they can to close the gap to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there have been plenty of rumours about which stars will play what characters in the DCCU over the next few years. One character that is going to get a reboot in the near future, is the Green Lantern, with a number of different Hollywood stars being linked to the role over the past few weeks and months.
Green Lantern is coming to the big screen
One name that has popped up on a number of occasions, is that of Fast and Furious actor Tyrese Gibson, with many fans suggesting that the talented star would be perfect to play the role of John Stewart aka Green Lantern. Tyrese has now spoken out about whether or not he is in talks to take on the character, with the actor admitting that he has spoken with Warner Bros. about having a role in the new film.
Gibson explained, "Well I was innocent from the beginning. I was at home eating a bowl of Lucky Charms in my drawers, my ugly feet were out, and I got about six direct messages on Instagram with photos of me as the Green Lantern. This particular fan who did this fan art said that there was a community of people that had been talking for like a month and a half about who they think would be the best Green Lantern and they all picked me. I said to them, ‘I took the oath, and I am going to commit myself to this process of seeing what’s possible.’"
Tyrese Gibson has been linked to the role
He added, "I’ve already had a couple of meetings at Warner Bros., so we’ll see what happens. I do believe that there needs to be more black superheroes out there, but that’s not even my motivation. I think I would be the best Green Lantern and based on my fans and supporters that spent around $6 billion in box office receipts, I feel like there’s a fanbase of fans out there waiting to see me put on this green suit and do my thing. So I would love to confirm something today but I can’t. We’ll just keep following up."
With that said, it looks like Star Trek actor Chris Pine is the favourite to star in the Green Lantern movie, taking on the role of Hal Jordan in the project. Green Lantern Corps is not set to hit the big screen until 2020, so we still have a long wait yet, although the character is expected to appear in other DC movies before then.
