Ever since Independence Day became such a huge success back in 1996, where it managed to gross over $800m worldwide, there has been talk of an Independence Day 2 movie happening. It was then claimed that Independence Day 2 would happen, but without Will Smith on board.

Will Smith in Independence Day
Now, German director Roland Emmerich says that Will Smith could appear in the movie after all. Roland claims that he and Will are going to sit down and talk about Independence Day 2, "I sometimes say no, Will Smith will not be in it because he didn't want to do it at first. Now we have a meeting planned, we want to talk about it again. Anything can happen," he told Digital Spy.
However, it does seem unlikely that Will Smith will return for Independence Day 2, as he recently claimed that he was looking to move away from blockbuster movies, "I think I'm going to start moving out of that and finding more danger in my artistic choices," explained Smith.

It has already been confirmed that the Independence Day sequel will happen with or without Will Smith and they will adapt the script accordingly. Original cast members Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum have already agreed to return for Independence Day 2, which will open in either 2015 or 2016.
